A wildlife biologist and experienced science communicator, Mariel has a deep passion for the environment. Born in Mexico City with Spanish heritage, she has carried out fieldwork in Mexico, USA, Spain and Australia. Mariel’s research focuses on frogs and sharks and is co-founder of the Shark Ecology Australia Group.
Mariel’s proudest achievements are her roles as a science communicator and STEM advocate – and as a self-professed STEMinist, she’s leading the charge to get women involved in science. She featured in a National Geographic documentary during its Shark Fest.
“Being showcased as a Latina in STEM doing shark science, especially fieldwork, was incredibly rewarding”. She enourages everone to embrase their local science community: “It’s about connecting with others, making a difference, and enjoying the process of discovery.”
Presented vivid talks and interactive demonstrations on frogs and sharks, including a frog call game at both National Science Week 2024 launch in Cloncurry and Science @Heart in Dubbo
I was also involved in the STEM roadshow Yarn about STEM and a collaborative breakfast with Zonta and UQ.
