We are Inspiring Australia Queensland

Inspiring Australia Queensland is working now to meet the challenges of our future, contributing to the Australian Government's vision for an Australian society engaged in and enriched by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Our work is guided by Australia's National Science and Research Priorities, acknowledging how important these are for the future of Queensland, Australia and the world.

National Science Week in Queensland

National Science Week (NSWk) – held in August each year – provides opportunities to celebrate the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. NSWk has been conducted annually since 1997 as a collaborative celebration of science and technology. IAQ facilitates diverse and inclusive Queensland-based activities and grants that increase interest in Australia science, improve critical engagement with key scientific issues, spark inspiration and elevate the value of science in Queensland communities.

Targeted Science (STEM) Communication

Targeted Science (STEM) Communication aims to increase awareness, participation and positive association in groups historically underrepresented in STEM through direct community engagement, building influential networks and the targeted application of resources.

Our Audience

We have a clear ambition to engage all Queenslanders in STEM and we act diligently to ensure those who might otherwise out on opportunities to engage with science are encouraged. This includes: First nations people, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people, Women and girls, People living in regional, rural and remote areas, People with a disability, people from low socio-economic backgrounds Neurodiverse people, LGBTIAQ+ people, People facing age based discrimination.,
Inspiring Australia Queensland acknowledges First Nations peoples as the Traditional Custodians and first scientists, makers and innovators of this land and their continuing connection to Country. We pay our respect to the Elders past, present and emerging.

Meet our inspiring ambassadors

Every year we seek out Queensland's most inspiring researchers to assist with community engagement around the latest developments in Queensland STEM and research happening now.

Dr Christina Zdenek

Christina is a former Fullbright Fellow, professional basketball player, and a 2021 ABC Top 5 Scientist. Her vision is to use science to promote a healthier relationship between humans and wildlife. Christina is a snake-handling instructor for the Australian Reptile Academy and has successfully raised the conservation status of the Palm Cockatoo twice.

Dr Katrina Wruck

A proud Mabuigilaig and Goemulgal woman with ancestral roots in the saltwater people of Mabuiag Island in the Torres strait, Katrina is postdoctoral (Indigenous) Research Fellow with a passion for finding innovative, green solutions for industrial problems.

Dr Mariel Familiar López

A wildlife biologist and experienced science communicator, Mariel has a deep passion for the environment. Born in Mexico City with Spanish heritage, she has carried out fieldwork in Mexico, USA, Spain and Australia. Mariel's research focuses on frogs and sharks and is co-founder of the Shark Ecology Australia Group.
